Neo-Confederates and the Junior Reserve Officer Training Corps (JROTC)

On this page the campaign to stop the  Sons of Confederate Veterans (SCV) and the United Daughters of the Confederacy (UDC)  involvement  in the JROTC programs in America's high schools will be reported on and tracked. At this time we are just trying to get the SCV out of the high schools. There is a seperate page on this website concerning the SCV and UDC and the ROTC programs in the colleges.

The program of the SCV is to hand out H.L. Hunley awards to JROTC cadets. They very plainly state that this allows them to meet future military officers and leaders in society and create a good impression with them, as well as associate with other leading organizations in the community and associate with the administrators of the high schools and have inflence with them.

The H.L. Hunley award is named after a Confederate submarine, H.L. Hunley.  They have given over 500 of these H.L. Hunley awards as reported some time ago, likely they have given out more than 1,000 of them.

NOTE: It seems information about the SCV award is disappearing from the internet. So you will notice that the following links don't have all the links that were on this page before.

The following are some links to SCV online sites. They may pull these sites as the public becomes more aware of this insideous program. This is still an active program and photos are published in the Confederate Veteran, official magazine of the SCV, of cadets receiving the H.L. Hunley award.

This page hasn't been kept  up. They have taken down the lists of the cadets getting the award. It does have a lot of background information.

They used to list them at their website as you can see by this archived copy from thee Internet Archive. You can't see which cadets got the award, but you can see that they used to list them.

Letters -- 2020 and later

The following are letters sent out to attempt to get the U.S. Military to stop this allowing Confederate awards and also asking the public schools to not allow SCV into their schools using these awards. They will be in chronological order. The following isn't necessarily all the letters that have been written. These are the letters written in 2020 and later. Earlier in 2015 an attempt was made which failed.
1. LETTER TO THE CHAIR OF THE DEPT. OF DEFENSE BOARD ON DIVERSITY AND INCLUSION SECRETARY  OF THE AIR FORCE BARBARA M. BARRETT.
The following letter was sent by certified mail to the chair of the Dept. of Defense (DOD) Board on Diversity and Inclusion concerning the involvement of the Sons of Confederate Veterans (SCV) and the United Daughters of the Confederacy (UDC) in the JROTC programs to Secretary of the Air Force Barrett and each member of the DOD Board of Diversity and Inclusion and the leadership of the Department of Defense. It was a total of 25 certified letters mailed out on 7/27/2020. We will update this page when we get a response.

On the fourth page of this letter in a table is a listing of all the persons who received a copy of the letter to Barrett as well as copies of the documentation send to Barrett excepting that which is online.

There are links in the letters to some resources about the SCV.  Also, on this website there is a web page for information about the SCV. http://templeofdemocracy.com/information-resources-about-the-sons-of-confederate-veterans.html
