Dallas Schools Named after Confederates

These are the schools named after white supremacists in the Dallas Independent School district. Schools whose history is related to homophobia is a 2nd section following this section.

FIRST SECTION - SCHOOLS NAMED AFTER WHITE SUPREMACISTS

* William Cabell  (DISD voted to change.) The committed war crimes in the massacre of African American troops during the Civil war.

* E.H. Cary He was involved with promoting the white supremacist book of Justin F. Kimball. Webpage forthcoming, but you can go read the entry for Kimball for now.

* William H. Gaston. He had a human zoo of African Americans called the Antebellum Negro Village. I have wrtten DISD askin gthat the school name be changed. This is the link to the page for the documentation and for the letter to DISD asking that the name be changed. templeofdemocracy.com/w-h-gaston-middle-school.html

* Tom C. Gooch. Supported the white supremacist Dallas Congressional Rep. Hatton W. Sumners, particularly in Sumners' campaign against passing federal anti-lynching legislation. Gooch editorialized in the Dallas Time Herald that the 1937 proposed federal anti-lynching bill was "vicious." You can read about him at this link and my letter to the DISD board asking that the name be changed. templeofdemocracy.com/tom-c-gooch-elementary-schoo.html

* Richard T. Hill. Was a smug racist who denounced the attempt to pass federal anti-lynching legislation. You can read about it here as well as my letter to the DISD school board asking tha the name be changed.   templeofdemocracy.com/richard-t-hill-middle-school.html

* John Ireland. Was a Copnfederate and a leader in overthrowing the multiracial Reconstruction democracy in Dallas. This is the link about him. templeofdemocracy.com/john-ireland-elementary.html

* Justin F. Kimball. This is a link to a paper about his reacist book, "Our City - Dallas," which was used as a text book by DISD students for some time. templeofdemocracy.com/justin-f-kimball-hs.html  Kimball also was the person who came up with the name for the racist set of cartoons published as "Texas History Movies." I am still doing investigations regarding that.

* Sidney Lanier Wrote a poem defending the Ku Klux Klan. This is the link where you can read the poem he wrote. DISD is already planning to change this school. templeofdemocracy.com/sidney-lanier-elementary-expressive-arts-vanguard.html

* John H. Reagan Was a Confederate and after the Civil War was an active white supremacist.  DISD is finally working to change the name of the school.  templeofdemocracy.com/john-h-reagan-elementary-school.html

Oran M. Roberts  This person was a vicious white supremacist who was a signficant historical figure supporting seccession, supported the Confederacy during the Civil War and campaigned for white supremacy afterwards.  You can read about him and download the paper, "Oran Milo Roberts: A Vicious White Supremacist," at this link. templeofdemocracy.com/oran-m-roberts-elementary-school.html

* Edward Titche Was a supporter and promoter of Kimball's racist book. A webpage will be forthcoming but for now you can go to the Justin F. Kimball page.

* Woodrow Wilson HS. He helped launch the notorious pro-Klan movie, "Birth of a Nation," in the white house among his other activities to support white supremacy. There is a petition to change the name and a group organized to do so.  For information about what is being done to change the name and about Woodrow Wilson go to this link. templeofdemocracy.com/woodrow-wilson-hs.html

The following schools have had their names changes and won't be in the above list.

* Stonewall Jackson (Thomas Jonathan Jackson.) DISD voted to change name.   Was a Confederate General.

* Albert Sidney Johnston DISD Voted to change name. Was a Confederate General.

For the Robert E. Lee school it had already been decided to change the names. The Jefferson Davis elementary school had its name changed some time ago.

DISD Trustees in December voted to add two more schools to the name change, William Cabell and Stonewall Jackson. So DISD still has six Confederate named schools.  I believe the only reason Stonewall Elementary was changed was because it is a fairly well known Confederate name. Cabell was changed because Michael Phillips published an article in the Dallas Morning News showing that Cabell was a war criminal involved in the massacre of African American troops.

Gaston and Reagan have streets named after them.

We will be adding pages for each individual school that still have Confederate names and populating them with information as time goes on.

SECOND SECTION

Schools named after anti-Gay bigots or have a history related to homophobia that needs to be known.

Come back later. Work in progress.

Nolan Estes Plaza  Nolan Estes announced that he would fire all the Gays and Lesbians in DISD his policies lead to the firing of George Blair Jr. at Hillcrest Highschool.
