Introduction
Hatton W. Sumners was a smug and loathsome racist who was one of the leading opponents of federal anti-lynching legislation in the 20th century and one of the reasons federal ant-lynching legislation wasn't passed until 2018. He was elected to the Texas at-large U.S. Congressional District in 1912 and then was elected in 1914 to the Fifth District which included Dallas and served until 1946 when he retired.
He was a lead opponent in the U.S. House of the 1922 Dyer bill and the 1937 Costigan-Wagner bill.
Yet, many Texans are unaware of his leading role in opposing anti-lynching legislation. It seems to have been covered up as his opposition to civil rights seems to have disappeared from the historical record. Look at this entry in the Texas State Historical Association (TSHA) online handbook.
https://tshaonline.org/handbook/online/articles/fsu04
You will utterly not find any reference to his role as a lead opponent of federal anti-lynching legislation or anything about his opposition to civil rights. This entry is a good example how the TSHA white washes Texas history.
Dallas has a Hatton W. Sumners Foundation and they have a bibliographic page about him to let visitors know that they think Sumners is a great hero.

You won't find anything about Sumners' leading role in opposing federal anti-lynching legislation or his ongoing opposition to civil rights there either.
Many, many organizations, cultural, political, and educational, work with the Hatton W. Sumners Foundation. A simple Google search will come up with many examples. Educational institutions have students involved with Hatton W. Sumners activities. These students end up putting on their resumes or bios that they participated in this or that Hatton W. Sumners activity not knowing how loathsome he was. It is a serious ethical failing of these institutions that they allow students to unknowingly have Sumners be included in their education.
Yet despite Sumners smug racism in Dallas at the Red Museum there is a Hatton W. Sumner Court Room to honor him. https://www.oldred.org/building-highlights. The picture above heading this web page is a plaque next to the door way entry to this court room which is quite substantial and impressive. It is not a small thing being done to honor Sumners.
That Sumners should be honored anywhere is appalling, but having a court room honoring one of the leading opponents of federal anti-lynching legislation in the 20th century is doubly loathsome, if that is possible, when it is at the Red Museum where the lynching of Allen Brooks was initiated. However, this is Dallas where all things are judged against the moral standard whether it will bring bad publicity to the city of Dallas and thus hurt business.
The Red Museum is the former Dallas county court house. It is where Allen Brooks was thrown out of the court room and lynched by a large mob on March 3, 1910. He was stabbed, beaten, and stomped on the head. He was dragged by a rope around his neck.
This is one website with a good account.

This page supplies from the Congressional Record Sumners' anti-lynching speech. Though the Congressional Record seems to have modified exactly what Sumners said. The Dallas Morning News reported for one speech Sumners was shouting "n*gg*r agitators," but the Congressional Record doesn't use that terminology.
Board Members of the Hatton Sumners Foundation
What type of people are attracted to be board members of the Hatton Sumners Foundation. Well notorious anti-Muslim fear monger Beth Van Duyne is one.
This is a link to the foundation. It is not surprising that a contemporary prejudiced fear monger would want to be a board member of a foundation which honors a bigot from the past.
