Temple of Democracy

Sumners speaking against civil rights in the U.S. Congress including giving women the vote.

Sumners spoke out against every measure that would advance human rights including giving women the vote. These are the links to the ten times he opposed civil rights in the U.S. House and once in testifying before the U.S. Senate Judiciary Committeee.  At the bottom of this page is a document of some extracts of some of his speeches for a quick overview of his racist speechs in the U.S. House of Representatives.
Sumners two most notorious speeches, against federal anti-lynching legislation in 1922 and 1937 are at the main Hatton Sumners page http://templeofdemocracy.com/hatton-w-sumners.html  Sumners later in 1944 in letters to supporters would brag how his speeches lead to discrediting federal anti-lynching legislation making it easier to have them blocked in the U.S. Senate.

Extracts from Some of Hatton Sumners Racist speeches

Instead of reading all of Sumners' speeches this sample of extracts give you a fairly good idea of Sumners' racist ideas and strategies in preventing civil rights and federal anti-lynching legislation.
